High Adventure

Pike O Blisco

For some people, the Langdale Valley is the gateway to the finest mountain climbing in England. In fact, the Langdale Valley was the birthplace of modern mountaineering, for it was here that early adventurers first came to pit their skills against the crags and rocks.

Those pioneers of mountaineering were barely equipped for the challenge they faced. Wearing tweeds and stout boots, and with no maps to guide them, they took, to the fells and began what has become one of Britain's favourite pastimes.

Modern fell walkers are much better equipped, and not only have maps but satellite navigation systems to guide them, but the challenges they face are no less awesome. The mountains remain virtually unchanged since those first intrepid climbers set foot on them over a hundred years ago.

The mountains of the Langdale Valley are no longer the preserve of the few. Anyone can tackle the peaks featured on the following pages. All you need is the right equipment, the stamina to complete the walks, and the time.
